Judging blog of the month is often one of the hardest tasks I have to do at YoungMinds. It’s not just how well the pieces are written and how well constructed the arguments are but it’s the ability of the authors to write so powerfully about raw emotions and thoughts. This month is no exception, when picking a winner where do I turn, do I go with the innovation shown in KCormack’s description of how Social Media can bring young people together? Do I go with the thoughtful advice for young people that Louise is giving so openly and honestly based on her own personal experience? Or do I go with Carrie’s brilliantly constructed blog on why celebrities are bad for mental health stigma which offers real food for thought for someone who deals with the media on a daily basis?
This month has been tricky to decide but I have decided to go with Down the Rabbit Hole by Vanessa. The Youngminds office is a noisy, chatty place and it can be hard to shut a lot of us up but watching Down the Rabbit Hole we fell silent at watching such an amazingly powerful film. In both the blog piece and the film Vanessa manages to clearly articulate the experience of being taken into and staying in hospital. What comes through is Vanessa’s desire to help people. She explains that as she reflects back on her experiences she wishes that she could pass on the knowledge she has learnt to her younger self, as she can’t do this she wants to pass on the experiences she had to others. As Vanessa explains herself “…I refuse to sit back now and close my eyes when there is slight possibility that this one film or one piece of writing just sets in motion a smallest change in one person’s thinking.”
Well done Vanessa! A really striking and powerful film that sits alongside your work ‘Deciphering the System’ that will be an extremely useful ‘road map’ as you put it for anybody going through a similar situation.
